Home Is Where The Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose, published by Blackstone Publishing (April 30, 2024) @jenevarosebooks @RandomTTours #Blogtour @BlackstoneAudio #booktwitter #Tbr #whattoread

A New York Times and USA Today bestseller. From New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and You Shouldn’t Have Come Here comes a chilling family thriller about the (sometimes literal) skeletons in the closet.

After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.

While going through their parents’ belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.

Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave.

Another beautiful cover for this book:

I hadn’t read Jeneva Rose before, but after seeing her book signings on Instagram and her entertaining videos on TikTok, I decided to give it a shot. The writing is smooth, dialogue natural and well done, and the plot holds up to the hype. The cover? WOW! Great idea and one I saw in B&N – allotted its own bestseller table and signage – and one I desperately wanted to buy.

The style of writing is easy to read with plenty of drama and tension. My curiosity, which was heightened by the first chapter, deepened as the pages turned. It was a character driven plot with a broken family at its centre.

Beth hears the last words her mother utters and tries to make sense of them. When her estranged brother Michael and younger sister Nicole arrive it’s time to piece the mystery together and to revisit earlier times. When they find old video tapes and witness a girl who had gone missing many years ago, the pace picks up and the action begins. This is a dysfunctional family where relationships and confessions are revealed on tape. Secrets slowly unravel and new characters and timeframes are introduced.

Some chapters go back in time, giving history and relevant backstory which are recounted through four points of view. The story is well researched and reminded me of things I recalled from the 90s. I felt Lucas was almost a foregone conclusion in the romance stakes and Nicole, struggling with drug addiction, got most of my sympathy. I’m glad of her story at the end.

It’s a unique premise and one I can see readers enjoying. I guessed the twist at the end early on but that didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment. It’s the how and the why that kept me turning the pages.

I want to thank Netgalley, Orion Publishing Group and the author for the privilege of reading an early copy of this book, especially Anne Cater for including me in this blog tour.
