The Vacation is a well written mystery where you’ll find yourself glued to the page all the way to the end. The premise promises us a fast-paced exposé into the lives of four women who have come to holiday in France as they used to in the past. But with a few too many twists along the way, I found myself thinking of the movie Diabolique where I wished Kate would stop the rollercoaster of who, why and how, and simply get on with it.
It was a story about a woman who sees a text on her husband’s phone and thinks he is having an affair with one of her friends. The problem here is that a wife would simply know WHO. Her intuition plays a hefty part but Kate can’t quite put her finger on why she isn’t homing in on one person in particular. This is where I felt the delays were unrealistic, although the end makes it clear as to why. I kept shouting at her to ask Sean! I get it that he’s dated others before her and that he had a history. Who doesn’t? But his sudden sullenness, his refusal to speak is irresponsible imo and hugely frustrating. As a couple, I saw this as information he should have responsibly imparted rather than keeping it to himself. None of the characters were likeable, especially a five-year-old who might have been described as precocious, especially with fully-formed sentences, and the rest of the crew harbouring secrets of their own. This is where the tension is top-notch and the pace accelerates. But the plot veers off and I was left confused.
At the end, we get a completely different but not entirely unexpected explanation. 😞 It’s not satisfying nor is it worth suspending disbelief for. This is a vacation that sent me in a tailspin of explanations, some of which had value, others I wouldn’t have touched with a barge pole if I were Kate. I would definitely recommend it though. The writing is impeccable.
